Most people in Japan don’t have extensive knowledge about krill. However, Japan is a country with an extreme emphasis on quality and a preference for premium ingredients. Krill oil is the go-to choice for quality concerned people, which is why we see our krill-based products gaining popularity among a broad specter of experts, including dieticians and athletes. This is exemplified by a Japanese former world champion in bodybuilding, who has stated that he takes 30 types of supplements a day, but that krill oil is his favorite.
He is not alone in understanding the great health benefits of taking krill oil, and I’m confident that once the Japanese people understand the quality of our products, they would choose Aker BioMarine’s products over other alternatives.
What is krill?
The Antarctic krill is a small crustacean that holds great powers, and Aker BioMarine is developing new and groundbreaking products solemnly based on krill. Let’s take a journey to the Southern Ocean to better understand krill. Krill are no bigger in size than the average paper clip (approximately 2-6 centimeters in length), but they are mighty, powerful, and come with big health benefits. A species of zooplankton invertebrates, krill exists in every ocean around the globe. Antarctic Krill, also known as Euphausia Superba, are among the largest of the 85 known krill species and make up one of the world’s largest single-species marine biomass. They move in huge swarms throughout Antarctic waters and feed on microscopic algae and their swarms are so dense and widespread that they can be seen from space.
As mentioned, krill oil is a quality product that is becoming an increasingly popular omega-3 choice for many reasons. Krill oil is a natural phospholipid complex of omega-3 and choline, plus it contains astaxanthin. Together these powerful nutrients work to support several functions. And one of the main attributes that sets krill oil apart from other omega-3 options is its phospholipid advantage. This means that the body immediately recognizes omega-3s (EPA & DHA) and incorporates them into the cells before carrying them to the tissues and organs that need them the most, such as the heart, brain, joints and more.
From a market perspective, krill oil is traditionally most well-known for its heart-health properties, but recent research suggests that krill oil has far-reaching benefits beyond heart health. Krill oil’s phospholipid-bound omega-3s and choline are especially important for liver health, and even have beneficial effects on skin hydration and muscle activation in sports performance. This opens up many opportunities for krill oil in Japan and beyond.
New opportunities for krill-based products
For instance, we look forward to launching INVI, the world’s first commercial marine protein powder based on krill, within a few years. As more and more consumers are opting for healthy protein options for personal, health and sustainability reasons, INVI will become a great alternative to other conventional protein sources and Aker BioMarine is looking to revolutionize the food and beverage category with this new ingredient.
In addition, we are the first company to produce LPC-bound EPA and DHA through our new product LYSOVETA™. This product is offered for free to the research community, and we are currently investigating the health benefits in particular for brain and eye health.

クリルとは？
